The Hike

The hike took place in a quaint suburb right on the outskirts of San Jose called Los Gatos. We started at the Flame of Liberty and ended in front of the new Los Gatos Veteran Foundation memorial. Both the city of Los Gatos and the Veteran Organization have been so incredibly supportive of our hike.

Most of the hike route took us through Vasona Park and its great lake views and creek trail. Local favorite Garrett Station hosted us for our lunch stop and were nothing of fantastic hosts. Never wanting to pass up a chance for a little competition, hikers had fun with cornhole, a ladder toss, a pushup challenge, and a pullup challenge while enjoying lunch. The entire hike was so relaxed and had a great vibe.

The Mission

“It was such a humbling experience to have led such an amazing event for Irreverent Warriors that is dear to my heart as a veteran, who has lost a sister a fellow veteran to suicide. I know the event saved lives, and I looking forward to doing it again."

-David Boston

The mission of every IW hike is the same – prevent veteran suicide by bringing vets together with humor and camaraderie. This hike was the perfect representation of that mission.

This was the first year for the San Jose hike, so there were tons of new connections and friendships made by veterans in the local area. There was also a few good doses of humor, like lead coordinator David Boston being asked to fill out a livestock COVID process form to host the hike (still not sure why), and encountering a rather excitable group of locals that were all set to be angry at us... until they realized we weren't protesting the election. But despite all of it, the good spirits of the hike never faltered.
