On July  24th, over 70 Veteran hikers and dedicated volunteers gathered in Reno to hike for the Irreverent Warrior cause - prevent Veteran suicide through connection, camaraderie, and humor.

The Hike

The hike was held in 'The Littlest Big City' in Nevada, with our starting point at the famous Reno Arch and ending at the 'Believe' sign and Space Whale - both of which are well-known art installations at Burning Man events. The route wound all through downtown Reno, the Brewery District, UNR, and a few local parks. Stops along the way included some great local staples likes Shifter's Pub and Shooters Saloon.

It was a HOT day, so the highlight of the hike (at least for the hikers!) was the chance to swim in the Truckee River and cool off for a bit. And, of course, the yard games of the classic tug-o-war and the 'clothespin' game (you gotta come to a hike to learn that one.)

The Mission

"Biggest Little Hike in Nevada... We are a Family."

The mission of every IW hike is the same – prevent veteran suicide by bringing vets together with humor and camaraderie. This hike was the perfect representation of that mission.

This group was a great mix of veterans, active-duty service members, and some seriously incredible volunteers. At one point, a volunteer and a hiker who'd gone to high school together years ago - and hadn't seen each other since - crossed paths and the look on their faces said it all.

It was great to hear how a few veterans that had been out of the service for some time wanted to try out a hike because they missed the camaraderie (not the military - just the people!) Little did they know they were coming to the original home of camaraderie.

Special Thanks

Thank you to all the local businesses and individuals who provided generous donations of food, drinks, andReno_5 monetary contributions, or hosted us for stops along the hike!

Shifter's Pub - for welcoming up with open arms at our lunch stop. We had a great time!

VFW Post 9211  - for hosting us for our meet and greet, and encouraged us to come back anytime. We had a blast.

Shooters Saloon  - for hosting us for our after-event and doing our raffles. Probably THE most military-supportive bar in all of Reno!

Genesee Roberts & The Wounded Warrior Projects - for showing up as an entire team to volunteer and help the hike go smoothly.

A special shout-out to these Veteran organizations and veteran-owned businesses that had tables set up at registration and were a huge support for our mission.
