The Hike

The hike route kept us in downtown Raleigh for the duration - which was perfectly fine because it's got some of the best scenery in America (we're biased... but, it's also true.) One of the major highlights of this hike was the overwhelming community support - especially from bystanders and passerby that interacted with us all throughout the day.

We made a few stops along the way at some local staples that made the 'local flavor' of this hike even stronger. But the real magic of this day started Friday night at our meet and greet, where we got to enjoy some of the best BBQ in the state thanks to Prime BBQ, and enjoy some quality entertainment from some local standup comedians that had us in stitches. This meet and greet - especially with over 200 hikers in attendance - is truly something special. Already can't wait for next year!

The Mission

The mission of every IW hike is the same – prevent veteran suicide by bringing vets together with humor and camaraderie. This hike was the perfect representation of that mission.

Even despite the summer North Carolina heat, the morale of the day couldn't have been higher. There was all the good old fashioned ribbing on each other like you'd expect - like when the Army v. Marines tug-o-war took a pretty great turn when the Army realized they could just let go all at once and drop the Marines in less than a second. It was hilarious to witness.

Another huge shoutout to Jen Merlo for following us the entire day and capturing some absolutely incredible photos so that every memory could be captured forever. You're the best, Jen!
