The Hike

The year's hike began in South Philadelphia in FDR Park, and then went on to wind through the largest neighborhood in South Philadelphia. The route took us right out to South Street, the most vibrant street in Philly. That's where we took the official hike photo outside Independence Hall and had lunch at The Plough and the Stars, a famous hotspot in South Philly.

After lunch and paying our respects at the Tun Tavern sign, we made our way back to our starting point at FDR park. The diversity of the hike route was fitting, since the military brings so many people from so many different backgrounds together. You wouldn't have noticed the differences that day though, because 120 hikers were too busy literally filling up entire Philadelphia streets as one unit.

The Mission

“Forever Philly"

The mission of every IW hike is the same – prevent veteran suicide by bringing vets together with humor and camaraderie. This hike was the perfect representation of that mission.

Outside of our own connections with each other, this hike was particularly fortunate to have a ton of local support and the chance to make great local connections, as well. For much of the day, the hike had a police escort who absolutely loved our mission. The entire police department was happy to help in any way they could.

Philly is a vibrant city that is always so alive. Seeing the way the hike interacted with the city as a whole was something special, and we're already counting the days to next year.
