On March 20th, over 150 Veterans gathered in downtown Palm Springs, CA to hike just under 12 miles to promote humor, camaraderie, and just a touch of chaos. The goal of every Irreverent Warriors Silkies Hike is the same - prevent Veteran suicide by making connections. Connections save lives.
The hike started and ended downtown, winding through the Western side of the city and ending on the main strip - where hikers were met with a slew of local support from spectators.
To cap off a great day - and because this wouldn't be a Veteran event without a little competition - hikers ended with a sack race balloon-popping hybrid game.
It was the perfect end to a day of great weather and new friendships.
The mission of Irreverent Warriors - and of every Silkies Hike - is to bring veterans together to make connections and grow their support system. To quote local coordinator Corey Hall - "Ever since my first hike, I've wanted nothing more than to help out however I possibly could, and I'm happy to say that I am excited to plan and set everything up again for this hike next year." Our coordinators put a ton of effort into these hikes - so if they're having a blast, imagine the fun hikers have.
Massive thanks go out to a few local businesses and organizations that were a huge help in making this hike what it was.
American Legion 519 for hosting us for our after-party and providing us with our own private area for food, drinks, and more fun. Your support and service is immensely appreciated!
Veteran Television (VET Tv) our 2021 National Presenting Sponsor (thanks for that free pair of Silkies to give away at the hike, too!)
Palm Springs Police Department for letting us host our hike without interference and without a hitch. Thanks for the waves and support along the way!
