The hike kicked off at the scenic riverfront and wound along the waterline and through the Upland trail - an off-road trail that runs alongside downtown Clarksville. From there, we headed to historic Franklin Street to pass the cultural museum and the famous Roxy Theater before stopping at the downtown commons for a quick break.
Lunch - provided by the delicious Mission BBQ - was at the L&N Train Station, a restored railroad station that's become a featured spot of Clarksville since it was restored in 1996. After lunch, it was onward through downtown to hit some local staples like Kings Bluff Brewery, Revel Brewery, and Plumb Line Coffee before sealing the day with the afterparty at Mikeys Downtown. Thanks to all these local businesses for their support, and for welcoming us at each stop with open arms.
The mission of every IW hike is the same – prevent veteran suicide by bringing vets together with humor and camaraderie. This hike was the perfect representation of that mission.
There were emotional moments, but there were plenty of comical moments that reminded us how powerful humor is for healing (thinking back to the group picture in front of 'Hookers Funeral Home'... because how could this group pass up that kind of opportunity?!) Sometimes, though, it's best to let hikers describe the atmosphere for themselves:
This was my first hike. Drove out from Fort Bragg and was definitely not disappointed. It was a great experience and I look forward to attending more and expanding my extended family.
What can I say? It was cold... and awesome. Met some new friends and got to see some family - had more laughs than a comedy show. Huge shout out to IW Clarksville team and their volunteers - ya'll put on a heck of a shindig. Can't wait till next year!
-Ed Scoggins (you heard the man.. see you next year!)
