On September 4th, over 100 veteran hikers and dedicated volunteers gathered in Cedar Falls to hike for the Irreverent Warrior cause - prevent Veteran suicide through connection, camaraderie, and humor.

The hike route kept us mainly on the Cedar River scenic trail route, and we broke off to head into town for the great local stops and detours along the way - including a stop at the Veterans Memorial Park where hikers took part in 22 + 1 pushups to honor those that we've lost to Veteran suicide. It was a great moment that really captured the spirit of the hike.
The outpouring of local support from the Cedar Falls community for this hike was nothing short of incredible - just scroll down and take a look at the sponsors list! From our Meet and Greet host - Urban Pie - for welcoming us with open arms, to our annual lunch sponsor Starbecks Smokehouse who never fail to disappoint - it made such a difference all throughout the day to feel so welcomed by the entire area.
Other stops included the Panther Lounge and Brass Tap - both of which were amazing hosts. Chad's Pizza - an absolute local staple - even donated tons of delicious pizza for the end of the hike. Our final stop (and afterparty) was at Toad's, a local bar and grille who's owner Ivan is a very proud Veteran supporter, and a continuous raving fan of the Silkies Hike every year.
The mission of every IW hike is the same – prevent veteran suicide by bringing vets together with humor and camaraderie. This hike was the perfect representation of that mission.
The day was - first and foremost - fun. There was a tug-o-war competition at the first stop, a bags tournament at lunch, and a minibike race/time trial at our final stop (shout out to Silver Eagle Harley Davidson for donating use of the minibike, and to United Beverage for donating prizes for the top three winners.) Veteran hiker Julie Ball won for the second year in a row. Nothing promotes connection among veterans like a little healthy competition!
Thank you to all the local businesses and individuals who provided generous donations, hosted us for stops along the hike, or were there with us at step-off to support the cause!
